1. Buy them used
You get the same information only a lot less expensive. There are many
websites where you can purchase used textbooks but some that have worked for me
are abebooks.com, valorebooks.com & biblio.com.
2. Buy the International edition
This can save you between 70% and 80%. Sometimes the chapters are may
have different titles but the information is the same. Often they are printed
in only two colors so if your subject area incorporates a lot colors (charts,
graphs, etc…) it may not be worth it.
3. Buy them from a classmate
Once you are enrolled you can find a common discussion area to purchase
books from your classmates who have already taken the class that you will be
taking in the future. This is also a good way to get supplemental information
like articles.
4. Rent them
Book stores like Amazon.com offer rentals. They are less expensive than a
new textbook. Generally they are about the same price as the International
edition.
5. Libraries
You can usually find the textbook at your local library and from a local
University. Most schools will honor your request with a current school ID. If
the information is minimal you can copy it and send it back right away. This is
protected under the copyright law if 5% or under is copied.
